You know you're coming to some kind of understanding, when every dream you've dreamed has passed and you're still standing.

Farewell to the king of the Wild things.

Farewell to the king of the Wild things.

I saw the Beastie Boys at UMass Amherst. It was their big spring concert - I can’t remember what it was called, Spring Fest or Spring Jam or something. It was the Beasties, Fishbone, Firehose, and inexplicably, Phish.

Check Your Head had just come out, and I was listening to it non-stop. This song blew my mind. All of it was golden. Even goofball tracks like “The Biz vs. the Nuge” were awesome. I had never been a big Beasties fan until that record, and that won me over.

They were a great act live. Their records kept skipping - they were jumping around on stage like maniacs, and the stage was shaky or something. You could hear it every time one of them skipped, but it didn’t matter. They broke out instruments to play “Gratitude” and a couple other songs.

I loved his voice. He didn’t have the bratty whine of Mike D - his voice was deep and gravelly and full of resonance. So were his words. I always waited for his part in each B-Boys song, because I knew that would be my favorite part.

RIP Adam Yauch. I can’t believe I’m writing these words. He was 47 years old. Cancer sucks.

Best way to end an argument, ever.

Abraham Lincoln, vampire hunter. This is a movie that actually gets me excited. The book was surprisingly awesome - hope the movie lives up to that.

Ann Powers on Whitney Houston

“I’ve long thought that someone should write an opera about this brash, brilliant woman, born a child of soul and raised to womanhood within the heart of crossover pop. She broke hearts, and was herself broken.”
